Raid debuffs and how to make your life easier

One thing I’ve always loved about Grid is that I can set up my frames to change to – OH-GOD-LOOK-AT-ME-I’M-BRIGHT-PINK – pink when someone has a nasty debuff. The rapid colour change to something bright and obvious immediately prompts me to bomb them with heals, run away from them, run to them, etc etc.

But with the release of TOC, it seemed that most (if not all) of the custom debuffs weren’t working. This was especially annoying for debuffs such as Jaraxxus’ Incinerate Flesh, which absolutely must be healed through to remove it, or the raid will take massive damage. If you can’t spot the person with the debuff, you lose precious seconds. Boss mods will announce their name, but having to scour through 10 or 25 people to find them (particularly bad in PuGs where you don’t know people’s names and classes) makes things very difficult. PLUS, if you can’t see the debuff drop off (either through being removed properly, or cloaked, iceblocked, etc), you’ll likely throw out 2 or 3 completely wasted heals to a target that no longer has the debuff. I know, because I did.

If you’re a Grid user and you haven’t tried GridStatusRaidDebuffs before, I really can’t recommend it highly enough. The reason I didn’t use it before was because I preferred to just set up my own custom debuffs; but the fact that TOC debuffs didn’t work, coupled with the fact that there seem to be more and more debuffs that I need to be aware of, pushed me to give it a try.

The one major problem for me though was icon placement. The icon needs to be large enough to see easily (since there are often 2 or 3 major debuffs in a fight and you need to be able to see which one your target has), but NOT obscure your frame information. And that’s exactly the problem I had: the icon was great, but it was sitting right over the top of my Lifebloom text, and obscuring the health bar. Bad.

To get around this, grab a module named GridIndicatorSideIcons – so you can place your icons at the side of your frame, not in the middle.

As you can see, the icon is clear, but it doesn’t obscure my HoT counters, texts, health, or any other information.

Perfect!

How to copy it:

1. Grab GridStatusRaidDebuffs here (Curse).

2. Grab GridIndicatorSideIcons here (WowAce).

3. Under Frame > Icon (Sides) > Left Icon, scroll down and check the box “Raid Debuff” (this will make sure that the GridStatusRaidDebuffs are placed on the left side).

4. To adjust the size and positioning, go to Frame > Advanced > Icon (Sides) and use the slider bars to resize and nudge the icon into the position that you want.

Note: if the icon is still showing in the middle of the frame, you may also need to go to Frame > Center Icon and uncheck Raid Debuff, and Status > Raid Debuff and uncheck “center icon”. Make sure the “enable” box is checked.

Your raid debuffs should be a lot easier to track, without obscuring your HoT counters or other information – it should make life a lot easier!

For xperl users, the raid highlight function works well. You need to add each debuff in manually first. It shows the spell icon over the player in your raid frames. Makes it easy for fights like the second TotC fight to know if you need to drop a rejuve on them for the slow runner who get the legion flame, or need to spam nourish on those with incinerate flesh.

I think I am going to have to try grid though, xperl doesn’t give me enough details on hots. Only seeing the 1 timer bar is often not enough.

You are da best Keeva. I’ve been suffering through icons blocking my lifebloom counter for ages and ages but I’m definitely going to be giving this a shot.

I’m also not familiar with GridStatusRaidDebuffs but I’m guessing it simply adds all of the raid instance’s raid debuffs automatically instead of having to go to auras -> Create new Debuff -> Activate the debuff under the frame tab and I use the center icon for those.

    Keeva,

Do you know if they fixed the issue where it wouldn’t show you your *yellow* text? Such as who has come on and offline, roll boxes, invites, etc?

I had used this mod prior to 3.2, but it broke for me in 3.2  I did post the error report up on the curse forums (along with many other people), and followed up to ask if a fix was put in place, but never saw a response in the few weeks I followed it.

I’d love to utilize it again, but I love seeing my yellow text more  Beruthiel´s last blog ..When Reaching a Goal Falls Flat My ComLuv Profile

Odd, I’ve had no troubles having my custom debuffs show up in Grid for ToC (including Incinerate Flesh). I’ve just had them set as half-opacity icons, and put them in either center icon, or in the corner/side icons granted by extra modules–the half opacity on the icon allows me to see things like LB counters and health bars and corner indicators beneath them.

Ian – thanks for that – I often feel bad that I can’t offer tips for non-Grid users :)

Sunkist – yes, that’s exactly right – the addon simply adds every boss debuff so that you don’t have to do it manually. I used to do them manually, but it seems there are so many to watch these days, I relented and just went with the mod.

Beru – I haven’t heard of that problem at all – Grid is somehow interfering with your texts? Weird..

Kae – I don’t know why, but it wouldn’t show me my debuffs after I added them manually. It was very frustrating, especially for incinerate flesh, grr. I thought it might have been an issue with manually entering the debuffs. So I thought I would give GSRD a try to see if that “fixed” it. Whether or not it did, or whether it was a PEBKAC issue, we’ll probably never know – but hey – it works and that’s all I need to know!

I also tried altering the opacity of the icons but still found it was making my text hard to see – that’s why I decided to try the side icons, to keep it out of the way. It’s hard to get used to.. I really do prefer my bright pink frames.. but I’m sure I’ll adjust.

I really like how you have your grid set up. The numbered countdowns for the hots is a nice touch – I tried something similar but removed it in favor of just a blue dot which changes from blue to dark blue when the hot has 3 seconds (1 tick) left. The only reason for this is that in 25mans I found grid was getting a bit busy with all the numbers and that essentially you only _really_ need to know if the hot has less than 3 seconds on it left.

For 10 mans though I can totally see why you go for the full information.

Is that the original grid or grid2? I picked up grid and the bars look nothing like that. Its a square with a simple colored square in the middle for me.

Hi Bajo – it’s Grid (Grid2 is still in testing I think).

Grid comes out of the box looking as you described – small squares – although I think when Grid2 is released they will have some default layouts (not sure though).

For Grid, here is how to make it look like my picture:

Thank so much for taking the time to write this guide. I have used your guides for grid in this past and they have never failed me! It makes being a healer more enjoyable when I am able to do my job even better

I’ll have to give this a try.

It’ll be great to see on Grid who has Incinerate Flesh from ToC. It’ll be even better if it shows me things like who Kologarn and Ignis have picked up. DBM tells me tells me these things but it would be nice to see it in grid so I can just spam away with the heals on them.

Just as a follow up to my earlier comment. I went out and grabed the newest Raid Status Debuff, and it seems that the problem that I was having with “yellow” information text has been resolved.

So, if anyone else was having that problem, it has been fixed! :) Beruthiel´s last blog ..How Could Blizzard Remove the Best Part About Onyxia?!?! My ComLuv Profile
