New toys make things better
Another string of migraines, this one Fri/Sat arv (that’s afternoon for non-aussies)/Sun night and (lucky me) waking up with one on Monday morning.
I went to work, and then packed up and went home again after 40 minutes. Codeine is my friend, but it knocks me around terribly. And it seems to only be effective for about half an hour or so. I suppose I should be grateful for that, though.
So I came home and went straight to bed for several hours. I think my migraines are mostly brought on by stress, which tightens up my shoulders, which sends pain up into my neck and head. The problem is that when I take time off with a migraine, I lose about $200 in wages for the day, and that adds to my stress, because sometime this month I will find out if my main job is being extended for 2 years, or is going to end in June. So basically, at the moment, any migraine has little chance of abating, no matter how I baby it. Lying down just feels like I have my head on a block of cement – but I try anyway.
BUT – what I forgot was that today is the day that my new 24″ widescreen monitor was set to be delivered!

(That’s my 17″ non-widescreen beside it. You have my permission to laugh at and/or pity me)
So I’m hopped up on Forte and admiring my shiny new toy, which will be so handy for me. For play – it means I can have Warcraft on the big screen (and be able to see more around me), and have vent, MSN, forums and strats up on the other. No more tabbing out to blog or write, and missing ready checks.
For business, it means I can have my work in front of me, and sites to the right, refreshing as I need. Or notes, or spreadsheets, or photoshop, or whatever. I find it SO valuable to be able to have two workspaces, instead of constantly switching between the two. I’m working on a new website at the moment and it’s such a pain in the butt to have to keep switching windows to see my changes each time. I think I’m actually more excited about the changes it will make to my work. So, so handy!
So.. my head is still hurting, and I’m losing money (ugh.. stress!) but at least I have an awesome new monitor setup, right?

Oooh, I wish I had the room for a two monitor setup. Alas, I am to much of a clutter-holic to ever have that as a possibility.
When you’re feeling stress, just bask in the glow of 41″ of monitor warmth. ^___^
Try a heating pad on your neck to try to relax the tension in your neck some. It might help with physical portion some at least. Another thing to try is the yellow, glare reduction sunglasses. Less eyestrain might make things easier on you as well. …and thankfully both are cheap options compared to what most doctors want you to do.
Having multiple screens is definitely a boost to web design work. At home I play + do Strayegg on a laptop, however at work I work on a pair of nice sized screens sat on a desktop.
It is so much easier to do my coding/design changes during my lunch break for Strayegg than it is to try and do it during a whole evening at home. Currently considering saving to set up a decent dual-headed desktop at home now.

I really shouldn’t mention what’s on my desk then. Have fun with the new toy
If you’re getting inexplicable migraines, stay off the chocolate and cheese for a week.
Oh, poor you! Many in my family suffer from migraines, I have luckily escaped so far – but I know how incapacitating they can be!
And grats on the lovely addition – looks nice!
I tried using duals, but having my mouse disappear off the edge of one and onto the other just freaked me out, particularly when playing.

He does find it very useful. I have a little pitiful 15inch square screen i’ve been contemplating using for dual screens. But i frequently move my computer (except screen) to my BF’s twice a week…and i don’t want to hual more crad there to and from every week.
On the migranes the only thing i can suggest is you take 20 minute breaks from computer every so often to help relax your eyes, or at least look away from the computer for a little to help em out. I find i get computer headaches. I find the antireflective coating on prescription glasses (not the yellow ones mentioned above) a bit of a waste of money. Something that I use at work has eaten at the reflective coating and it’s peeling off. If that wasnt’ the case I always find the blasted stuff scratches too easily leaving unsightly lines.
Keeva,
I don’t know if it’s available in Australia, but I am on a prescription called Imitrex for my migraines. (I might have spelled that wrong).
The medicine itself makes me feel very…odd, when I take it, but it does wonders for the headaches. The oddness I get when I take it are all listed in the side effects. I don’t particularly care for it, but if the headache has me hanging my head over the toilet boil, or has me praying for a very dark room filled with silence, it’s completely worth it.
Might work a bit better than the codene if it’s available to you

I recently just went from a 17″ monitor to a 23″…now I have no idea how I ever played on the 17″ for so long.
I would do that but as I previously said I play on a laptop
Would hate to think how heavy a 23″ laptop is, a 17″ is big enough

aw, i hope your migraines go away.
and enjoy your new monitor and all the real estate you’ll have to place your add-ons on. when i upgraded from a 17″ to 23″ it was like heaven!
Hi, long time reader, first time writer. as a sufferer of migraines since i was just a kid (its hereditary in our family). two things i can recommend. The first , preemptive – sour and stressful neck muscle are a number 1 reason, get a neck , shoulders and head massage weekly. i know it sounds strange but i can say from personal experience that it helps greatly. second, when the hurts comes, take a cold shower with the stream directly on your head, soothes stuff for me.
As for the screen, i play with a 24 wide
Nice monitor.
Yep. I agree with Itay. Get someone to massage your shoulders and neck and when that’s not available, use a heating pad on them.

I hear you about the codine knocking you around. I usually end up feeling sick (due to codine) for about an hour before it kicks in.. then I feel great for 45 minutes or so.. and then i’m out cold… sleeping (due to codine again.) and then I wake up with the same migraine I had before the codine. And that’s only 8-16mgs (two t1’s if you have them there)
Nice new screen though. Gorgeous! I’m on a laptop but my poor desktop screen looks exactly like that.
I likes my two monitors – I have 2 at work as well – so much easier to multitask

Ooh! Migraines!
I had one while I was in the hospital with pneumonia, and was having the same issue with pain meds, they didn’t cut it for long, and they needed me to rest so that I could work on healing. The doc pulled a frakkin miracle out of his hat. Seriously. Migraine gone within an hour. The drug was http://www.migraines.org/treatment/pro_frct.htm
He said that it can’t be used terribly often (less than 30 pills in a month plz) so I guess it wouldnt be good for someone who has migraines like every day. I don’t get them that often, so it was a freaking charm.
(out of the hospital now, havent had to take it again. still sick, but no frakking migraine!)
What you are describing are tension headaches. Not migraines. That is probably why migraine meds won’t make a difference, as migraines are vascular based.
Good luck with the headaches. I get them too.
