Debuff: Cubital Tunnel Syndrome
So.. fairly certain I have Cubital Tunnel.
Imagine smacking your funny bone – you know that feeling? Now imagine that the feeling never goes away. Ever. HAPPY FUN TIMES.
Waiting on x-rays to make sure it’s not an issue with my neck, but my doctor is pretty sure it’s carpal/cubital – I have some tingling in my thumb/index/middle, but mostly it’s my pinkie. It’s possible I have carpal AND cubital (with more emphasis on the cubital).
For the last few weeks I’ve been complaining of having cold hands even when my body is perfectly warm. I didn’t think much of it, though, because I always get cold when other people are hot. I thought it was just winter or something.
Then in the last week or so, my fingers have started to tingle. Again, I just thought it was the cold weather making them tingly. No big deal.
They yesterday, they tingled all day, with a numb feeling too. It was driving me crazy. I couldn’t sit at my desk, or drive, or rest my arm on anything for more than a few seconds before the feeling came back again. So I made an appointment in the afternoon to see the doctor. I suspected carpal tunnel, but thought maybe it could be a circulation issue, and possibly related to my migraines.
He was really great – very friendly, laughed with me (instead of the condescending courtesy laugh that most doctors give). Actually felt my hands with his fingers, for changes in temperature etc. He did a bunch of strange tests, including flicking the nerve on my wrist, which did nothing for a while until he got it bang on, and I jumped about a foot and yelped. Bingo!
I am exacerbating the problem with long periods of computer work, but also the way I sleep with my hands curled up – I’m not sure why, but it’s stupid, and I hate that I do it – but I can’t stop it while I’m fast asleep. So I bought a wrist brace to wear while I’m sleeping and working (or gaming). Forcing it to stay straight while I sleep should help with some of the irritation.
The problem though is that while it’s great to type in, very comfy.. the brace part actually pushes against the back of the mouse, so it makes the mouse do things I don’t want to do. In a raid setting this would mean a lot of trouble using mouseover macros, because the cursor will go off in directions that I don’t mean it to.
I’m hoping that it will get better, that I’ll get used to it and it’s just that I’m not comfortable with it yet.. but at the moment I am feeling pretty down. WoW is my way of “getting away” from things that stress me or upset me.. but what happens when I’m upset about not being able to play?
I needed a break from raiding anyway, I guess. But it does make me worry that I won’t be able to be a raider again. Last night I couldn’t raid with it, so I played an alt for a while, but I had to keep dropping my hand down to dangle at my side, to alleviate the buzzing. Basically, anything that has my arm bent at the elbow makes my fingers tingle – so, sitting with my arms on an arm rest, driving, using a mouse.. lots and lots of things. It’s crazy annoying.
On the bright side, he started me on migraine blockers, so at least I (hopefully) won’t have to worry about being out of action for days at a time with migraines. A buzzy finger is driving me up the wall, but I would take it over migraines any day. Not really keen on surgical options, but I guess I’ll have to wait and see if the brace (and some adjustments at work) improves it enough for me to cope.
Blah.

I had the same symptoms, I started exercising with a Powerball everyday and it didn’t take long before my hands/wrists were better. Now after only 4 weeks I don’t have anymore of those symptoms. Check out “NSD Powerball”.
Good luck!

Ordered!
I loved it when I tried it before.. I’m so glad you mentioned it, because I never would have remembered. I’m thrilled, I can’t wait to get it, I remember how much fun I had when I tried them.
Hooray! A fun new toy AND the prospect of being able to play WoW!

One thing I found that helped my wrists a lot (I’m a programmer and play too much WoW, too) is a thumb trackball like this one: http://www.logitech.com/en-us/mice-pointers/trackballs/devices/166
That might help with your brace issue, since moving the mouse itself doesn’t move the pointer, if you can get used to the feel of the trackball. I love mine, but it took a while and a lot of tweaking to get the settings right — the key is to have it fast enough that you aren’t moving your thumb a lot.
The powerball thing looks cool, I might check it out…

Aw, feel better! I bet the arm will get better. I had a nerve thing like that once too, and with proper care it DID get better. Yay! Good luck to you!

I’ve been diagnosed with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome a month ago. I’m a programmer, with a long history of FPS playing (Quake series) and later WoW.
My tingling fingers are just the thumb, index and middle. I’m not too keen on doing the surgery as well, despite being the doctor recommendation. I’ve been looking into acunputure treatments. And it seems to have a high sucess ratio.
Also i’m using a splinter during sleep which has helped a lot. It’s really cheap and despite the initial discomfort doesn’t hurt a bit and it really makes a difference in the morning.
Hang in there. Gonna check out the powerball as well.

aww
Sorry to hear that.
The good news is with proper exercise it will probably go away. Also the bracer, I have one too (one for each wrist in fact) and at first it was hell to get anything done. But then I adapted and now I don’t even remember that I’m wearing them (though if you are going to heal a raid, try a few dungeon runs first to get used to the difference ;))

I had Cubital Tunnel Syndrome a few years ago, and I can attest to the suckiness. For me it got so bad before it was diagnosed that I could only write like a five-year-old learning their letters. The good news is that by keeping my arm positioned correctly and cutting down only a very tiny bit on my computer time, after a few months it was gone. But trying to keep my arm much straighter while playing was definitely a pain! I think the recommendations of exercise are excellent as well, but know that it doesn’t mean having to give up computers that much as long as you keep your elbow from being bent at 90 degrees while awake and asleep and pay attention to your symptoms. Good luck, and I hope you recover quickly!

Aw no, that really really sucks
I reckon you’ll get used to it enough to be able to play casually, but there’s always reading and TV as well, at least an engrossing movie/TV show/book helps take my mind off things as well as WoW does. I hope it gets better soon <3

I’m so sorry to hear that
Perhaps you should turn your WoW raiding break into an intentional break and re-assess with Cataclysm? Perhaps if you choose the date when you return it won’t make you so unhappy with something that is essentially out of your control.
There’s absolutely no other hobbies that you’d like to pursue away from the computer? I’m a bit of a mad sewer/dressmaker when my eyes need a break from the screen
You’ll find something!

I started my college career as a very serious music performance major. I was a classically trained musician that played a minimum of 5 hours a day, leaning closer to 8. I had full blown Carpal Tunnel in both of my wrists/hands my Junior year of High School, and it only got worse through college.
I was recommended for surgery, which would put be out of playing for about 6 months, and declined that option. However, as many other people have stated there are really good alternatives available to deal with recovery/pain.
I used Ibeprofen as an anti-inflamatory, with a side benefit of dealing with the pain. I used the wrist braces 100% of the time that I wasn’t playing, and I took frequent breaks to stand up and stretch my arms, hands and wrists. All of these things really helped to ease the pain, however, Ultimately it wasn’t “solved” until I went to law school and put down my instrament. That being said, there are PLENTY of ways to make it managable and see improvements while still doing what you love
(p.s. I’m totally hooking you up with that Bedazzler!)

Sorry to hear about your troubles.
I’ve been having twinges here and there. I do exercises on my wrists (rotational) and alternate mousing hands. (Right when I game; left at work. Trained myself that way to prevent carpal tunnel.) I also picked up one of these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000S5UGG0/ The wrist support (actually, a palm support–no pressure on the wrist) moves, so the motion required by your wrist is less. Takes a little training to get the feel of it, but it has helped my situation.
I’m intrigued to hear about the Powerballs . . . totally going to look into that . . .

When this happened to me, it was because of how I leaned on my arm rests. My solution was to take the arm rests off my chairs, and get rid of the chairs which they couldn’t be removed from.
Chances are really good you’ll be able to do all the computery things you want to do once you learn to sit differently–just make sure no weight is on the elbow and very little on the forearm. Also, don’t be surprised if you need a few days break so the swelling can abate! (I presume you got prescribed some anti-inflammatory.)

Thanks everyone!
My right hand already feels a lot better with some support from a brace. I think it will only improve from now on.
Typing is a bit clumsy, it will take some getting used to, and I have to go buy a smaller mouse, because my big MX700 bumps agains the splint part of the brace and makes my mouse do things I don’t want it to do. Mouseover healing would be out of the question.
But, a few little changes to how I have things set up.. and it should be okay. I’ll still have to cut back a bit, to give it a chance to heal.. can’t sit with my elbows bent for too long.

I am sure you will be well soon. Some sport + some rest will do the trick
My mom is a doctor and she always said you should not go 1 way only. Unfortunately she is a stomach specialist so I cannot give any good advices here but I already see lots of them above.
Some time ago I’ve started to get headache after raids, especially on the next morning, so I also need to work it out; basically I think I need to play in more relaxed style but hey this is a bit boring and sometimes it is just not possible when you see the raid health bars going down like stocks after bankruptcy notice.

Oh hey, so _that’s_ what was causing me to wake up with numb fingers last winter before it got nice and warm up here and I started to not have quite such the troglodytic lifestyle. I figured I was pinching some nerve or other, but I couldn’t figure out which, and there didn’t seem to be any conscious way to keep my arms straight at night, so I figured it was just something to deal with. I’ll have to dust off my Powerball and see if that keeps it from flaring up again.
You antipodeans are all funny – winter in July? Psshaw as if.
