Super quickie: Cata glyphs observations
Super quick post because we don’t have full info yet.
MMO have details of the new glyph interface in Cataclysm. They also have some new glyphs up for some classes, but not druids yet. I’ll post new glyph info when it is announced.
In Cataclysm, glyphs are no longer like consumables; once you learn them, they are saved to you, and you can switch between them. So you will only have to buy each glyph once. I have to wonder what this will do to the glyph market, as raiders will no longer have to buy stacks of glyphs to min/max for encounters.
The UI will list all available glyphs for your class, and will grey out the ones that you don’t “own” yet.
I really have to be honest – a LOT of what I’m looking forward to in the expansion comes from UI improvements. I find them very exciting, and I’m really glad that Blizzard is putting so much effort into improving them. The new glyph UI looks brilliant – a big thumbs up.
Now, a couple of comments about it:
- The new “learnable” glyph system will mean that any druid who is levelling as feral or balance could heal dungeons with actual healing glyphs in place – without wasting money. My newest druid had to shell out 50g for a Healing Touch glyph on her server – there’s no way I would want to swap that in and out all over the place, paying 50g+ each time. With the new glyph system, I could invest in a HT glyph once, and swap it in and out without destroying it and having to buy another. Nice.
- Gimmicky, super-specialised fights that require us to use weird glyph combos – such as HT on Anub, or back when I used to bring in Regrowth for Thorim HM (massive tank damage) – won’t mean trashing glyphs every week and wasting money. Personally I don’t care much about cash, I’m swimming in it, but I hate wasteful behaviour, so it irks me to use enhancements like they are candy. It will give people more freedom to swap their glyphs around per-fight, without worrying about running out (of cash or glyphs). I love it.
- Glyph of Arctic Wolf. No druid glyphs announced yet, but this certainly makes me wonder whether we’ll be getting some cosmetic shapeshift glyphs.

This could possibly be AWESOME for me… and costly as well. One of the biggest hurdles to running a true hybrid cat/bear spec is the need to have different glyphs for each form…. if I can switch them out at will, I can free up my secondary spec to go back to healing…

1) This system seems AWESOME for glyph users, and CERTAIN DEATH for glyph sellers.
2) The hint that we may get cosmetic glyphs is awesomesauce in a golden cup.
As you mentioned, this could have some great impact on leveling in addition to dungeons/raids. I’m excited… well, only as excited as Dr. Cynicism can possibly be
