Plugins, widgets, and gadgets

Here’s a list of the plugins that I used to put this site together, and any other addons and gadgets that I recommend. Note: most are WP-only, but some can be used with other blog platforms.

AddtoAny – Subscribe/share buttons for your blog. Gives your readers a huge list of subscription options.

Bad Behaviour – Thwarts spammers.

Better Search – Replaces the default WordPress search function and gives you a page of post titles and snippets by relevance, instead of simply returning every (entire) posts that ever mentioned your search query. Can be made to fit your existing blog template (even a CSS noob like me managed to work it out..).

Cbox – Adds a chat box to your site! Very easy to install and configure to match your site.

CommentLuv – Shows a link to commenter’s last blog post. This helps me find new blogs to read!

Enhanced WP-ContactForm – A super simple, drop-in form to allow readers to contact you. So easy to put in!

Forgot the Category – A very simple plugin that does not allow you to post until you’ve chosen a category. No more being slack for me – now all my posts will be categorised!

Liz Comment Counter by Ozh – A simple counter that shows how many comments have been made on your blog.

Maintenance Mode – Maintenance Mode allows you hide your blog while you make changes. I prefer to do things behind the scenes, especially if there’s a chance I could mess something up. Maintenance Mode lets me hide my blog while I work on any major changes, and only I can see the finished product until I deactivate the plugin – all other users see a Maintenance announcement page. You can edit the announcement page to your liking or to fit your blog theme.

Possibly Related Recent Posts – adds a list of recent blog posts that may be related to the current post. List is generated on the fly by recency, based on categories and content (not tags though). You can decide how many to list.

StatCounter – Free counters for your site. Easy to configure and install. Allows you to track your incoming and outgoing traffic.

Subscribe to Comments – Allows readers to subscribe to a particular post’s comments.

WP Ajax Edit Comments – Allows users and admin to edit their comments. Admin can set a time limit for this (eg 10 minutes). No more embarrassing typos that you can’t change!

WP Grins – Clickable smilies for comments! Just another little plugin to help your readers express themselves.
